NaNoWriMo is almost here! If you’re feeling nervous about the upcoming month, NaNo participant Jessica Warrick wants to remind you that you’re not alone for this grand challenge and perfection is not required!

Well friends, it’s that time of year again. The leaves are turning here in the U.S. and writers all around the globe are gearing up for another whirlwind of NaNo November. If you’re anything like me, you may be finding yourself riddled with intimidation at the prospect of taking on this challenge. Whether you’re stifled by your word count options, overwhelmed by character or world building, are unsure about the order of events in your book, or any other thing(s) that ought to stand in a writer’s way, I can assure you: you are not alone.

Dialogue tips that actually work:

  1. You are not writing a movie (ignore this if you are). The reader doesn't need to know every word the characters say for the duration of the story. Less is more.
  2. Dialogue can happen within the prose. "And they awkwardky discussed the weather for five minutes" is way better than actually writing five pages of dialogue about the weather.
  3. Balance your dialogues. Surprise yourself with a monosyllabic answe to a dialogue that's ten sentences long. Don't be afraid of letting your character use half a page for a reply or nothing at all!
  4. Don't write accents phonetically, use slang and colloquialisms if needed.
  5. Comma before "said" and no caps after "!?" unless it's an action tag. Study dialogue punctuation.
  6. Learn the difference between action tags and dialogue tags. Then, use them interchangeably (or none at all).
  7. Don't be afraid to use said. Use said if characters are just saying things, use another word if not. Simple. There's no need to use fancy synonyms unless absolutely necessary.
  8. Not everyone talks the same way so it makes sense for your characters to use certain words more often than others. Think of someone who says "like" to start every sentence or someone who talks really slow. Be creative.
  9. Use prose to slow down the pace during a conversation.
  10. Skip prose to speed up the pace during a conversation.

Five Steps to Edit Your First Draft

You’ve just done something incredible: written an entire draft of a book! Congrats!

But it’s far from being ready for queries. So, how do you self-edit your first draft?

Let it sit

Undoubtedly you’re excited to get to work, but you need time to gain perspective. Besides, you’re probably a bit burnt out from writing the book. Give yourself some time before editing.

Make a List

Make a list of what you want the reader to take away from the novel and keep it beside you as you read through.

Read Through

Do a preliminary read-through in which you don’t make edits. Instead, create a list of problems and take notes as you go. I try and make at least 5 notes per chapter, no matter how good I think it is! Also, refer to the list from the previous step and be sure you’re successfully addressing these problems.

Work Out Solutions

Referring back to your list of problems, try and craft a solution that doesn’t lead to further issues.

Implement These Solutions

Go back to your draft and work these solutions into your draft.

hold on just a second!!! notice how the letter says youre blacklisted if you’re specifically working for a guild signatory. the strike isn’t about, like, writing in general. its misleading to say if you get paid for writing during the strike you could be blacklisted from the WGA for life. its only if you work for a company that is in contract with the WGA, which is basically any big TV or film production company. however there’s different rules for some indie production companies, for commercial writing, video game writing, etc. if you’re a writer you can still work during this time without scabbing, just do your research first

I'm in full crisis:

I have dealt with a social media stalker lying about me to anyone with an open anons for 4 years. Their motivation is entirely anti-Semitic. That the harassment has begun again during a period of violence against Jews, is not coincidental by any means. The harassment caused me to lose my last housing due to sustained financial hardship. I am not now nor have I ever been the terf my stalker claims and irrespective of saying so people claim I don't deny it.

The stalker has started up again. I'm already suffering financial hardship. I wasn't able to provide food for Thanksgiving due to the harassment.

I have rent due. That's $4500, insurance, phone, and I must pay people. Then my former landlord presented a bill for over $7000 which included two months of rent I wasn't living there.

I need some help, I need support because through all of this I'm a full time caregiver to my mom with dementia and aphasia and I'm opening an art gallery that is women's art focused and everyone who works here is neurodivergent and also femme identifying. In Colorado which is very cowboy art centric place.
